July, 2007

Ten Years was performed by Hong Kong Voices on June 2, and the piece will be performed again by the Hong Kong Young People's Chorus on August 11, both at the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts.  Also in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta will be performing a new version of Variations On at the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall, on October 26, 2007.

This past year, I had the opportunity to attend the SCI National Student Conference in Tempe, AZ, the UT Austin Graduate Student Conference, as well as the 2007 John Duffy Composers Institute at the Virginia Arts Festival.  I'm currently working on a new chamber opera for American Opera Projects, to be performed on October 12 and 13.

Also coming up, I'll be working on a new piece for the Boston University Concert Band, as well as a new project for Volti, a San Francisco chorus that focuses on new works.

October, 2006

Next week, Momentum Studies will be performed at Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona, as a part of the 2006 SCI National Student Conference. Other upcoming performances include a reprise of Grand Junction at Duke University on December 2nd, and a live performance of Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel for violin and piano with Paul Leary on piano.

Also, I'll be commuting between Durham and New York City just about every month to attend the American Opera Projects Composer & The Voice workshop series. The workshops culminate in a song recital with five other composers in May, 2007, and a program of opera scenes in September of 2007.

March, 2006

On March 14, 2006, We Two Boys was given its Baltimore premiere by Robert Maril and George Lam, at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. The concert also featured Michael Trinastic on piano, and featured settings of texts by and inspired by Walt Whitman, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the seminal Leaves of Grass.

Upcoming concerts include two (count them, two!) performances of my flute trio Momentum Studies. The first one will be on April 19th in Durham, North Carolina, and the second one will be on May 2nd in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The Lingering Effects, a new work written for Lydia Miller, will be presented by Ms. Miller on May 14th in Purchase, New York.

In other news, I will be heading off to the Aspen Music Festival this summer to be a part of its composition master class. As a result, I have the opportunity to write a new work for the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble. The new piece will be performed in concert during the 2006 summer season.

More details about the upcoming concerts are here.

November, 2005

On Novmeber 4, 2005, Homecoming... was performed by Grant Gilman and the Peabody Concert Orchestra at the Peabody Conservatory, as the winning work in the 2005 Macht Orchestral Composition Competition.

We Two Boys will be performed by Tom Jaynes and George Lam at Duke University on December 8, at 8pm, as a part of the Department of Music Graduate Composers Concert. More details are here.

Fog Argument was performed by Robert Maril, baritone and Michael Trinastic, piano at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill last night. The piece was presented in a program of new (and old) music, as a part of the SCGMC third annual conference.

The Fair Youth of The Sonnets was a great success! The new short one-act opera based on five Shakespeare Sonnets were presented in a triptych of new operas all inspired by Shakespeare, including Kevin Clark's Some Ado and Amy Kirsten's Ophelia Forever. The Peabody Opera Workshop produced the opera at Baltimore's own black-box independent theater, the Theatre Project.

The original cast and orchestra will go into the studio for a recording session, and a CD and DVD of the production will be released later this month. Thanks to everyone for their support of this project!
